How do different roofing materials compare?

Do old shingles have to be removed?
Building codes differ from city to city. Installing shingles over an existing roof can be done under certain conditions. Most codes allow you to put one layer over an original layer, for a total of two layers. Doing this adds approximately 225 pounds per square (10' x 10' area) to your roof deck. It also compromises the life of the roof, because you have an old layer under a new one.
Can a bad section be repaired without replacing my entire roof?
In most cases, a repair can be made to temporarily stop additional damage to other areas of the property. It can be risky to make judgments based on expanding a roof life beyond what it was originally designed for. If a problem arises at the end of a roof's life, it probably can be repaired, but look at it as a first sign of trouble. Allow us to give you a free estimate at your convenience. How long does it take?
Size of the project is what determines the time it takes to complete a roofing operation. Location of property and type are other factors. But weather is the biggest factor. Allowing for perfect weather, you can expect the following: A single-family one-story re-roofing consisting of 1200 square feet, one layer of asphalt shingles can be done in one day, start to finish, providing no complications arise.
What about local building codes?
Every city has its own building codes, though some are mandated from state codes. We have the knowledge to perform to those standards. Over the past several years, building codes have changed drastically to protect the public from poor and unscrupulous roofing practices. We obtain building permits for every project that is required to have one.
